2012 Lt. JC Stone 50k Ultramarathon. Race Report.

by:  Lou D'Angelo, Race Director

It was a hot one. Like seven inches from the noonday sun....  Well not that hot, but if you ran this year's Lt. JC Stone 50K you know it was an important day to manage your hydration, nutrition and your effort.  At the start we were pleased to welcome five members of Lt. JC Stone's family.  His two brothers  (Don and Norm), sister (Catherine) and a niece with her husband, all came out to be a part of this event.  This race is put on to raise funds for the Rotary Club of Hampton Township and is run in honor of Lt. JC Stone (KIA Viet Nam) and all of our service men and women who serve to protect us.  A portion of the funds are used to support various charities and non-profits that assist military families.

We lined up 64 runners at the start (that included the members of Lt. Stone's family who didn't plan to run 50K). 59 of them intending to go the distance did so! Our 2011 overall male and female winners were back again to defend their ranking, and did so!  Overall male winner, Andrew Bartle, has now won our race 3 years in a row.  Ben English (2011 4th overall) made it a race and pushed Andrew on the last two laps. Connie Gardner has won the female overall for the five years we have been hosting this race!  That is an awesome streak.  Stacy Kopchak finished second, and Lori Piedmont came in 3rd for the women.  Our third place male was Doug Bazinski (he won in 2009).  Our Masters male was Bob Pokorny from Medina Ohio, and our Female Masters winner was Audrey Burgoon.

While it is fun and interesting to list the winners in a race, our race is designed to provide each of our runners with a personal experience.  We want you to have a great race whether it is your 1st or your 100th Ultra. That is why we designed the route to start and finish at the parking lot of the Boat House.  We allow you to put a drop bag at the aid station, or set up your own personal aid station at your car in the parking lot. You want a pacer, or one for each lap, then go ahead and bring them with you.

Watching our first time ultramarathoners do battle with the challenges of the distance is amazing to watch unfold over the course of the day. We've all run our first Ultra. Do you remember it?  Wasn't it awesome?  Our first-time ultrarunners get the support of our volunteers, the benefit of seeing the lead runners a couple of times (yep, sometimes we get lapped), and a great course to experience their first 50K.  We get some of the best race reports, blog posts and emails from our first time ultrarunners.

More to come........
